Trivandrum or Thiruvananthapuram, as it is known is the capital city of the State of Kerala, which is popularly known as God’s own city. Trivandrum is a beautiful sea side city built on seven hills. The city has derived its name from the word Thiru Ananthapuram, which means the home of Lord Vishnu, the Supreme.
The formation of Kerala itself is deep rooted in history and the episode of Lord Parasurama needs no further mention.
In spite of the development and urbanization, Trivandrum still manages to retain its tradition and enviable culture, which is reflected from the red tiled roofs, narrow winding lanes and pathways and the most sought after joints. The city is thus a reflection of the modern trends yet maintaining the heritage and culture that is attributed to it.
The city was under the rule of the Travancore dynasty. It was the capital of Marthanda Varma, one of the most famous and well known rulers of the Kingdom of Travancore. The revered ruler of Travancre surrendered all their rights, possession to the deity and thereafter they came to be known as Padbanabhadasa, the servants of the deity.
Trivandrum is one of the most sought tourist destinations on the globe. Unlike the other tourist spots in the world, Trivandrum still continues to be affordable for all kinds of people, which makes it unique. In short, it can only be felt and not described.
SOME BASIC FACTS ABOUT THE LOCATION OF TRIVANDRUM.
The city is located in the southern tip of India. The city has a spread of 2, 200 sq km approximately and the population is around 36 lakhs ( rough statistics).The male to female ratio is 1:1.1 .
Trivandrum shares its border with Tamil Nadu at a place called Kaliakavilla which is en route Kanyakumari. It is a distance of around 40 kms from Trivandrum city.
On the north is Kollam District and on the east is the Thirunalveli District and on the west is the beautiful and exotic Arabian Sea.
FAMOUS SITES AND SPOTS IN TRIVANDRUM
Any description of Trivandrum is not complete without the age old Padbanabha Swamy Temple. The abode of Lord Vishnu, where the Lord rests on the sacred serpent Anantha is one of the rare forms of the Supreme.
The temple is surrounded by massive fort walls on all the four sides. The traditional Agraharas within the fort, the small trading centres and the ethnic food houses all take us back to a totally different age, yet retaining and providing the facilities and amenities of the modern times.
